From Intra’s Collapse to the Golden Age

In October 1966, Intra Bank—Lebanon’s largest bank—collapsed in the most serious banking crisis in the country’s modern history. Through state intervention, the 1967 reforms, Elias Sarkis’s tenure and the accumulation of gold reserves, Lebanon moved in less than a decade from the edge of collapse to what became known as its golden age (1970–1974).
